Combobox’s “The Sermon” is a two-minute blast of Southern Gothic punk fury, crackling with the frenetic energy of someone sprinting through a haunted forest. Clocking in at just over two minutes, the track channels eggpunk’s jagged irreverence and post-punk’s angular tension into a hyperkinetic narrative loosely inspired by real history—but filtered through a fever dream of moral panic and sardonic wit. The band’s self-described “spankwave” aesthetic is on full display: jittery riffs, stop-start rhythms, and Zach Kay’s wired vocal delivery conjure the neurotic charm of Talking Heads meets the explosive volatility of System of a Down. There’s garage rawness here, but it’s razor-focused—every second calibrated for maximum propulsion, leaving no room for breath, only reaction.

Hailing from Portland and sharpened in the crucible of DIY urgency, combobox wastes no time on ceremony. “The Sermon” exemplifies their signature economy: compact songwriting, black-and-white visual identity, and live sets that barrel forward like a runaway train. As part of their debut EP Oh No! (2025), the track fits snugly alongside other absurdist, emotionally charged vignettes that skewer modern anxiety with a smirk and a shout. With a lineup solidified in late 2023 and production handled by Colin Weaver at Empty Lane Studio, combobox has honed a sound that’s both cerebral and bodily—made for skanking, pit-stirring, and existential head-scratching in equal measure. In “The Sermon,” salvation isn’t preached; it’s screamed, then vanished before you can ask what it meant.
