Ark Identity "Deluxe Nightmare"

Sounds from Canada

31/10/2025 |

Ark Identity’s “Deluxe Nightmare” (4’42”) is a gripping centerpiece to Toronto artist Noah Mroueh’s six-track EP of the same name—a masterful collision of dream-pop shimmer, psychedelic atmosphere, and alternative rock grit. Anchored by live, one-take drums and fuzz-drenched guitars, the title track channels childhood terror into a grungy, euphoric soundscape that feels both claustrophobic and cathartic. Inspired by recurring nightmares of flying monkeys shattering his bedroom window, Mroueh leans into dissonance, repetition, and raw vocal takes to simulate the inescapable loop of a bad dream. Even the background shouts—imperfect, spontaneous, human—add to the track’s feverish realism, as if the nightmare is unfolding in real time.

While “Deluxe Nightmare” thrashes with visceral unease, the EP as a whole reveals Ark Identity’s expansive range, weaving moments of intimate reflection with moments of distorted grandeur. Echoes of Duran Duran’s stylish pop sensibility linger beneath the haze, but Mroueh pushes far beyond nostalgia—into surreal, emotionally charged territory. The record closes with the title track dissolving into the haunting cries and flapping wings of those phantom monkeys, a surreal bookend that lingers like an echo in the dark. True to its creator’s vision, Deluxe Nightmare doesn’t shy from discomfort; instead, it transmutes fear into art, proving that creative breakthroughs often lie just beyond the edge of what scares us most.
