Hollow Star "Capital"

Sounds from the USA

15/12/2025 |

Hollow Star’s “Capital” pulses with the jittery electricity of post-punk’s golden age, filtered through a distinctly American lens of power pop urgency and new wave melancholy. At just under three minutes, the track delivers a tight, bittersweet melody anchored by wiry guitar lines, a propulsive groove, and Micah Lopez’s taut, emotionally charged delivery. The band interplay is sharp and intuitive—every bass throb, drum snap, and jangly chord serving the song’s restless energy—recalling the architectural precision of The Smiths and the brooding atmosphere of early Cure, yet never feeling like mere homage. Instead, “Capital” crackles with its own nervy authenticity, a song forged in the friction between control and collapse.

As the second single from Hollow Star’s debut EP Listen—recorded humbly in a Los Angeles apartment with only a poodle as witness—“Capital” exemplifies Micah Lopez’s obsessive craftsmanship and emotional candor. Having cut his teeth reverse-engineering Joy Division riffs and mastering every instrument out of sheer necessity, Lopez now channels that discipline into music that’s both meticulously constructed and raw with vulnerability. “Capital” doesn’t just evoke the 80s—it reanimates its spirit with contemporary urgency, bridging the gap between nostalgic texture and present-tense longing. With its debut EP arriving January 9th, Hollow Star announces itself not as a revival act, but as a necessary new voice in the lineage of post-punk’s most poetic agitators.
