The debut single from his upcoming solo album Dream Vessel, this track pulses with a choppy, meditative groove in 5/4—driving and repetitive like a mechanical tide—while layered guitars ebb and flow like waves of sound, drenched in reverb and cinematic atmosphere. Inspired by the surreal textures of Twin Peaks, the synthscapes of Tangerine Dream, and the angular intensity of 80s King Crimson, “Trancers” unfolds as a live, unedited performance by the William Covert Trio, captured in the studio with no overdubs. The result is a raw, immersive experience—equal parts math rock rigor and dreamlike drift—where time stretches and the mind wanders.
A veteran of Chicago’s experimental underground, Covert has spent over 15 years behind the kit in bands like Space Blood and Droughts, but with Dream Vessel, he steps fully into his own as a composer and sonic architect. “Trancers” exemplifies his fusion of live-looped synths, acoustic drums, and improvisational jazz sensibility, creating music that feels both meticulously structured and wildly free. On this album, Covert expands his vision with guitarist Jack McKevitt and bassist Nathan Schenck, leaning into improvised noise-jazz, slowcore melancholy, and minimalist repetition. The rest of the album features Covert alone, weaving ambient dreamscapes influenced by Frippertronics, modular synths, and math rock complexity. With Dream Vessel set for release in Fall 2025 and an accompanying tour on the horizon, “Trancers” marks not just a debut single, but a bold arrival—a statement of intent from an artist diving deep into the unknown.
