“Dovetail” by Chimes is a brooding, slow-building track that immerses the listener in a melancholic soundscape shaped by subtle dark ambient textures and new wave influences. Hailing from Gainesville, Florida, the band channels their collective musical past—drawing from projects like Against Me!, Averkiou, and Sunshine State—into a more atmospheric and synth-driven direction. Fronted by singer-guitarist Mike Magarelli and keyboardist-guitarist Kyle Fick, Chimes formed in 2019 as an outlet for experimental ideas, later solidifying into a full band with bassist Matt Brink and drummer Todd Weissfeld (later replaced by Warren Oakes following Weissfeld’s move abroad). Despite pandemic-related setbacks, the group has managed to carve out a distinct sonic identity—one that blends post-punk sensibilities with shimmering synth-pop and dark wave aesthetics. “Dovetail” is a compelling example of this evolution: restrained yet evocative, intimate yet expansive.
