“Maestrale al Traverso,” the first single from Angelo Gregorio’s upcoming album The Jazz Sailor , is a richly textured and evocative piece that blends progressive rock, nu jazz, and jazz fusion into a seamless musical journey. At over five minutes long, the track unfolds like a sailboat leaving the calm bay and venturing into open waters — starting with a warm, intimate atmosphere before building into dynamic waves of improvisation and rhythm. The Maestrale wind, known for its strength and direction along the Mediterranean, becomes a metaphor for artistic propulsion, guiding the listener through shifting sonic tides.

As a saxophonist, composer, and orchestra conductor, Gregorio brings a deep academic and emotional background to his work. Born in Salerno, Italy, and based in Brussels since 2010, he has cultivated a unique musical identity shaped by classical training, advanced jazz studies at the Royal Conservatory, and a passion for cross-cultural collaboration — notably through his founding of the Orchestra Italiana Bruxelles. His latest project, Jazz Sailor, reflects not only his love for the sea but also his commitment to sustainability and the idea that music can be as fluid, exploratory, and boundless as the ocean itself.

With “Maestrale al Traverso,” Gregorio captures the essence of movement — the push and pull of wind and water, the pulse of percussion, and the soaring lines of the saxophone that mimic both breath and breeze.
