DahL "High Tide"
Sounds from Canada
31/10/2025 | Montreal’s art rock enigma DahL returns with “High Tide,” a 3-minute, 5-second plunge into nautical mystique and psychological unease. The track pulses with a mantra-like vocal delivery, industrial-tinged grooves, and meticulously layered arrangements that coalesce into something both cerebral and visceral. Anchored by a hypnotic rhythm section and atmospheric textures, “High Tide” feels less like a song and more like a fever dream set adrift—equal parts prison break and polar odyssey. Frontperson Nassir Liselle’s haunting narration blurs the line between confidant and captive, inviting listeners into a world where identities dissolve into saltwater static and spectral companionship.
Inspired by Judith Schalansky’s Atlas of Remote Islands, the song spins a cryptic tale of exile, casting its characters—possibly prisoners, possibly lovers, possibly figments—as drifters on the edge of oblivion. Recorded at Studio Saint Zo with Preoccupations’ Monty Munro, “High Tide” trades DahL’s usual electronic density for a rawer, more immediate physicality, emphasizing live percussion and bass to mirror the urgency of their stage presence. The result is a paradoxically accessible yet deeply disorienting piece that defies categorization—an emotionally charged grey zone that, in Munro’s words, “I have no idea… but I like it.” And that’s precisely the point: “High Tide” isn’t meant to be solved, only surrendered to.
