The Dahmers "In the Dark"

Sounds from Sweden

28/01/2026 |

The Dahmers' "In the Dark" opens with the crackle of a vintage horror film reel—a campy yet effective mood-setter that gives way to something far more substantial: a 3'42" descent into shadowy psychedelia where Black Sabbath's doom-laden gravity meets the haunted atmospherics of modern psych-rock. Hailing from the unlikely Swedish town of Bromölla, the quartet trades some of their earlier punk velocity for a grander, more deliberate soundscape, weaving melancholic vocal melodies through walls of fuzz-drenched guitar and spectral synth lines that hover like mist. There's a palpable Roky Erickson-esque mysticism in the track's DNA—the sense of sorrow not as affliction but as sacred terrain—while the raw, garage-band urgency inherited from compatriots like The Hives keeps the track from drifting into mere atmosphere. This is horror rock with emotional intelligence: the evil isn't cartoonish but internalized, a darkness to be inhabited rather than escaped.

As the third and final preview of their forthcoming album Creature Feature, "In the Dark" completes The Dahmers' evolution from straight-ahead garage-punk toward a more cinematic vision—one that embraces space, texture, and emotional weight without sacrificing edge. The production balances claustrophobic intimacy with widescreen drama, letting dissonant guitar harmonies and throbbing basslines build tension beneath lyrics steeped in alienation and occult longing. Yet for all its shadowy grandeur, the track never loses its punk heart: the drums snap with purpose, the riffs retain a primitive bite, and the overall effect feels less like pastiche and more like genuine possession. In an era of polished genre exercises, The Dahmers offer something rarer—a band unafraid to slow down, lean into the gloom, and let the atmosphere linger until the lights come up and the spell remains unbroken.
